Three eight-year-olds charged with East Calder cemetery vandalism
30 AugustThree eight-year-old boys have been charged in connection with alleged vandalism and damage of around 50 gravestones at East Calder cemetery.
The damage took place at the cemetery on Monday 29th August and the total value of the damage caused is currently being estimated.
The youths, who are all aged eight, will now be reported to the Children’s Reporter, West Lothian Police said.
Livingston MP Graeme Morrice has reacted with anger to the news that over 50 gravestones at East Calder Cemetery have been vandalised.
Mr Morrice said: “I was shocked to hear of this mindless act of vandalism. There can be no excuse for such appalling behaviour and I condemn it unreservedly.
“It is particularly horrifying that children so young should have carried out such an affront to the community in East Calder and the memory of those at rest in the cemetery.
“However, it also raises the question of why the parents allowed these very young children to be out at night to commit such a terrible crime.”
